API Keys

Higher rate limits across every API and MCP endpoint, plus the gated datasets, with a free API key.

Most Open Data API endpoints are available without authentication. An API key unlocks additional capabilities and higher throughput.

What an API key unlocks

  • The AI and crawling law dataset: crawl policy and a per-scenario access matrix for the jurisdictions researched so far, with dated freshness metadata on each row
  • Full report detail endpoints, with findings, recommendations, and responses
  • Higher rate limits for all API and MCP endpoints
  • Access to authenticated-only data fields
  • Usage dashboard to monitor your API consumption

The API reference marks every endpoint Open or API Key.

What we log

When you use your API key on a gated dataset (California Grand Jury reports, or the AI and crawling law dataset), we record one row per request. It holds four things: the time of the request, which of those two collections you asked for, a one-way hash of your key, and whether the request counted against your daily allowance or was answered free as a revalidation of a copy you already held. The hash is stable and the time is exact, so requests made with the same key can be counted together, and placed in time, over the period we keep them. The hash cannot be turned back into your key.

We do not record which report or which jurisdiction you fetched, and your IP address is not part of the row. Requests to open endpoints are not logged this way at all. What the rows are for is capacity: how much of the gated data is being read, and how much of that we answer without touching storage. Cloudflare runs the analytics store and keeps them for three months, after which they are gone.
