Dormancy Periods
The dormancy period is how long property must be inactive before it is considered unclaimed and reported to the state.

Virginia uses a general 5-year dormancy period for most property types, with shorter periods for wages (1 year) and longer periods for traveler's checks (15 years) and money orders (7 years). The Virginia Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act is codified in Title 55.1, Chapter 25. In May 2025, Virginia launched the 'VA Cash Now' initiative to mail funds directly to citizens without requiring a claim.
Finder / Helper Restrictions
Restriction Level: Strict
Fee Cap: 10% — No agreement may provide for a fee exceeding 10% of the value of the recoverable property. Applies to all agreements entered into after the 36-month waiting period has elapsed. Va. Code § 55.1-2542.
Waiting Period: 36 months — It is unlawful for any person to seek or receive compensation for locating property that has been reported or delivered to the administrator prior to 36 months after the date of delivery by the holder to the administrator. Va. Code § 55.1-2542.
Solicitation Rules: No solicitation or agreement is permitted during the 36-month period after property is delivered to the administrator. The administrator issues warrants directly to the actual owner, heir, or fiduciary and is not bound by powers of attorney or assignment documents presented by claimants.
